Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank — DORA-licensed stillwater fly fishing guide, Colorado & Wyoming
Stillwater Specialist · Colorado & Wyoming

Thomas Frank has spent years obsessively dialing in stillwater trout tactics across Colorado's most productive high-altitude reservoirs — and now puts that hard-earned knowledge to work for his clients. His specialty is stillwater fly fishing with a deep focus on indicator-based systems, chironomid presentations, and balanced rigs, with the ability to transition to intermediate and sinking lines when conditions demand it.

His approach is built on the stillwater methodology pioneered by Brian Chan and Phil Rowley — reading water temperature and depth, matching the chironomid and leech life cycles, and letting the indicator do the work. It's a system, not guesswork, and it's what consistently puts clients on trophy cutbows and trout 20"+.

What separates a Thomas Frank guided day is the emphasis on education. Clients don't just catch fish — they leave understanding depth control, presentation refinement, and in-the-moment adjustments they can apply on any water, anywhere.

Wyoming Stillwater

Big-water trophy stillwater. Walk-wade the shorelines or kick out in a float tube for hard-pulling browns and rainbows, cutbows, and cutthroat. This is the flagship — wide-open water where the chironomid and balanced-leech game shines. About a 2–3 hour drive from Westminster, CO.

What Makes This Different

The Playbook

🎯

Stillwater Specialist

This isn't a generalist guide service. Stillwater is the entire focus — depth, temperature, and the chironomid and leech life cycles that most anglers never crack.

📚

Chan / Rowley Methodology

Built on the proven stillwater system pioneered by Brian Chan and Phil Rowley. A repeatable process you can take to any lake — not a bag of one-off tricks.

🪝

Hand-Tied Trout Tricks Flies

You fish the exact patterns we tie and sell — the box that's been proven on these waters. The same flies are available to order so you can keep fishing them after the trip.

👥

Small Groups (1–3)

Never a crowd. One to three anglers per guide means real instruction time and your hands on the right rig all day long.

🧠

Education-Focused

You leave understanding depth control, presentation, and in-the-moment adjustments — the confidence that lasts long after the trip ends.

"I love how these flies are tied on 2x wire hooks. You don't have to worry about losing trophy trout as these hooks don't bend out. Great selection of stillwater flies that are made here in Colorado. Nice to support a local family business."

Questions

FAQ

How do I book a trip?
Call or text Thomas directly at 303-917-8278, or email thomas@trouttricks.com. Send your preferred dates, how many anglers, and which trip you're interested in. There's no online checkout — we'll confirm everything over a quick conversation. (Online booking is coming later.)
What if the weather is bad? What's the cancellation policy?
Stillwater fishing happens in a range of conditions — light rain and wind are often good for it. But if conditions are genuinely unsafe (lightning, dangerous wind, ice-off hazards), we'll reschedule at no charge. If you need to cancel, give as much notice as you can and we'll find another date. We'll talk through the specifics when you book.
What gear do I need to bring?
Bring your fishing license, weather-appropriate layers, polarized sunglasses, and waders/boots if you have them. If you're fishing the float-tube option, we'll coordinate that ahead of time. Rods, reels, lines, and flies can be provided if you don't have stillwater-specific gear — just let us know when booking. The flies we fish are Trout Tricks patterns, available to take home.
Do I need fly fishing experience?
No. These trips are education-focused and we tailor the day to your level — from first-timers to experienced anglers who want to crack the stillwater code. Beginners are genuinely welcome; you'll leave understanding the system, not just having caught a fish.
What's included in the trip price?
Guided instruction, on-the-water coaching, and the local knowledge to put you on fish. Flies and terminal tackle for the day are included. What's not included: your fishing license, food/drinks, and gratuity. Wyoming trips require a Wyoming fishing license — we'll point you to where to get one.
Do you guide families and kids?
Yes. Small groups of 1–3 anglers work well for families, and we keep the day paced and positive for younger or newer anglers. Reach out and tell us about your group and we'll set up the right trip.
How many people can come on one trip?
Trips are built for 1–2 anglers per guide (pricing is listed for both), with up to 3 in some situations — ask. Keeping groups small is intentional: it means real instruction time and your hands on the right rig all day.
